L-arginine is an amino acid that helps the body build protein.Your body usually makes all the L-arginine it needs. L-arginine is also found in most protein-rich foods, including fish, red meat, poultry, soy, whole grains, beans and dairy products. As a supplement, L-arginine can be used orally and topically.Because L-arginine acts as a vasodilator, opening (dilating) blood vessels, many people take oral L-arginine to try to treat cardiovascular conditions and erectile dysfunction.
What Does L-Arginine Do?
A healthy circulatory system is critical for carrying nutrients to all parts of the body. L-Arginine shows tremendous benefit on the circulatory system. In the body, L-Arginine is converted to Nitric Oxide (NO) which is utilized by the endothelium (cells lining the inside of blood vessels) causing vasodilation (opening of the vessels).
Glutathione (GSH) is the second most powerful antioxidant known to man. It is a molecule found naturally in your body. Produced by the liver as well as by neurons in the central nervous system, glutathione is a tripeptide made up of three amino acids: L-cysteine, glycine, and L- glutamate with a gamma peptide linkage between the carboxyl group of the glutamate side chain and cysteine. The carboxyl group of the cysteine residue is attached by normal peptide linkage to glycine.
What Does Glutathione Do?
As an antioxidant, Glutathione is involved in metabolism of toxins and carcinogens, DNA synthesis and repair, protein and prostaglandin synthesis, amino acid transport, immune system function, prevention of oxidative cell damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals, peroxides, lipid peroxides, and heavy metals, and enzyme activation. Proponents claim that glutathione supplements can help treat and prevent a number of health conditions.
Glutathione is said to protect against a wide range of health problems, including atherosclerosis, Lyme disease, Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, colitis, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, alcoholism, asthma, cataracts, diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, hepatitis, liver disease, and Parkinson's disease.
In addition, glutathione is purported to reverse the aging process, prevent cancer, and preserve memory.
The Multiple Target Molecule - A Key Player in the Endocannabinoid System
A unique fatty acid that can be found in eggs and a variety of plant sources, and which is also produced endogenously (within our own bodies), Palmitoyl-ethanol-amide (PEA) plays an important role in the body's systematic response to pain and inflammation.
What Does P.E.A. Do?
Palmitoylethanolamide (P.E.A) is an endocannabinoid-like molecule which our bodies produce as needed to deal with bodily stress, injury, or infection. It serves as part of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS): a complex communication network or cell-signaling system throughout our bodies which helps regulate a variety of functions, including protecting nerve cells, preventing arthritis and cardiovascular disease, and countering inflammation.
Is P.E.A. a Cannabinoid?
Although P.E.A itself shares many of the same functions as the phytocannabinoids in CBD (which is derived from cannabis oil), it is produced naturally by most mammals, so it receives a different medical and legal classification.
Some common food sources of PEA include milk, peas, tomatoes, corn, soybeans, soy lecithin, and peanuts.
P.E.A. and Pain:
A 2017 meta-analysis investigated the efficacy of P.E.A for pain relief. Eight randomized controlled trials accounting for 743 patients receiving PEA and 460 patients given either placebo or no treatment showed a significantly greater pain reduction in those given PEA. Daily dosages ranged from 300mg to 1200mg, and treatment duration ranged from 10 to 180 days. Interestingly, there was no association between longer treatment durations and pain efficacy. The authors found one trial that compared 2 weeks of use of P.E.A. versus ibuprofen in 24 patients with arthritis of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). Patients given PEA has significantly decreased pain compared to those given ibuprofen. Ibuprofen treatment also resulted in 3 patients to have the side effect of a stomachache, compared the PEA group which reported no side effects.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is classified as a “Phyto-cannabinoid.” This means that:
